Preliminary Application for Builders and
Creative Makers rooted in East Oakland
 

 

Who we are: 

We are the Brower Dellums Institute for Sustainable Policy Studies and Action. We are a group of planners and designers passionate about transforming urban spaces and empowering underrepresented communities in long-term ways.  Since 1969, we have worked on projects involving: local economic development, cultural expression, watershed restoration, fire hazard reduction planning, homelessness prevention, design in parks, environmental education, solar energy equipment, and the development of a Green Building curriculum through Merritt College. 


We believe the best way to uplift the community is by providing safe, nurturing outdoor spaces. We will empower the community to uplift itself! 

 

Position description:

We are now partners on the $4.1 million project to build the San Leandro creek Greenway Trail From Deep East Oakland to  Martin Luther King Jr Shoreline.  Our partners; Sobrante Park RAC, Planting Justice, Higher Ground, and others are joining forces to transform the land from a neglected stretch of land to a vibrant community space. 

 

We need creative, talented artists to design and build the outdoor furniture, signs, and place markers for the new San Leandro Creek. 

This is a contract position. You will make $500-$3500+ for each piece ready to install. 

 

Who you are:

  • Passionate about woodworking, metalworking, design, or  building

  • Enjoy collaboration for problem-solving

  • Like working with materials and hardware

  • Eager to build items that reflect the diverse cultural history and natural history along the Leandro (Lisjan) in Oakland (including Native Halquin Ohlone, African American, Latinx, Japanese, and Italian)

  • Live or work in East Oakland, Oakland or the East Bay

We are also looking for people that have spaces and materials to work from. If you have a manufacturing, maker, Fab-Lab, shop space, and/or tools, please indicate that on the Google Form. 

 

Timeline: 

The timeline is subject to change in order to protect the health and safety of all participants. 

Summer 2020- Outreach, site visits, and information will be sent out

Fall 2020- Design process begins 

Winter 2020- Begin construction and installation.
